The current study offers a systematic and comprehensive review of the discourse on ‘courtesy’ in the historical narrative Zuo Zhuan, which is part of the Chinese Shi San Jing collection. The study first explicates the origin of ‘courtesy’ and the relationship between ‘courtesy’ and ‘music’ and then addresses the changes and developments on the philosophy of ‘courtesy’ that existed from the beginning of Zhou to the Spring Autumn period. The effective values of ‘courtesy’ narrated in Zuo Zhuan were classified and studied into 3 categories: national-social effective value, individual effective value and predictive effective value. Finally, the relationship of ‘courtesy’ in relation to various notions of morality was studied. This included the relationship between courtesy and justice, respect, faithfulness and humility. The study highlights that the Spring and Autumn period was one in which the humanism of ‘courtesy’ flourished.
