This article examined second language (L2) lexical processing in text translation within the framework of the revised hierarchical model (RHM). The aims of the study were to investigate a) to what extent translation process is conceptually mediated or lexically based in two languages and b) whether and how L2 proficiency has an influence on the use of conceptual and lexical links. A text translation task and a word recognition task were performed by the adult Korean learners of English, whose two languages are typologically distant. The L2 learners performed the text translation faster and more accurately in the L2 to L1 direction than the L1 to L2 direction, indicating more demands of conceptual processing in the L1 to L2 translation. Results from the word recognition task showed that the higher-proficiency L2 learners were more semantically mediated in the L2 to L1 translation, suggesting the developmental changes of the use of conceptual memory in an L2. These findings together generally support for the postulations of the RHM and generalize the model to a text-level translation.
