Recently, there are appeared new novels that represent disaster with despair or dystopia world. This article looks three novels for fear and anxiety of our society.
Jung yoo-jung’s 〈28〉 dealt with infectious virus having a fatality rate almost 100%. The epidemic was spread across the imaginary city. The city was locked up and then was full of crimes and violence. Jung exposed the Korea resonated with competition and trust breakdown, finally foresaw disastercollapse. She felt doubts about human existence system by the communicable disease between men. Pyun hye-young’s 〈The ash and the red〉 showed the fall of the individual under wide spread disaster. This novel didn’t have a well-organized passage but described the collasp of an anonymous ‘he’ who was transferred diffuse disaster country ‘C’. He indulged in destructive behavior, it proved destroyed each individual daily life. Yoon gho-yeun’s 〈The travelers on the night〉 represented dark tourism on the base of disaster. The relationship linked together by money came out more vicious circle through tsunami. The heroin tried to escape this relationship but failed. However there were natives that had lived in the tsunami thanks to mangrove swamp, they made hope to new community solidarity. As a result three novels reflected on a bad human system and individual fear by the disaster.

최근 들어 재난과 결부된 절망이나 패배 혹은 디스토피아적 전망으로 점철된 소설들이 등장하고 있다. 본고는 세 편의 소설을 통해 이 소설들이 우리사회의 어떠한 공포와 불안을 드러내고 있는지 살펴보았다. 정유정의 「28」은 100%에 가까운 치사율을 지닌 전염병이 퍼지는 가상 상황이 펼쳐진다. 전염병이 발생한 도시는 폐쇄되고 그 도시는 무법천지의 공간이 되면서 범죄와 폭력이 범람한다. 개인, 집단 상호간의 신뢰가 붕괴되고 경쟁으로 이합집산되는 대한민국 안에는 불안과 공포가 만연해 있고, 재난과 결합되었을 때에는 걷잡을 수 없는 무간지옥이 펼쳐질 수 있다는 것을 집요하게 잡아내고 있다. 또 인수공통전염병을 통해 이기적인 인간의 생존 방식에도 의문을 품게 한다. 재난이 일상화되어버린 공간에서 개인이 맞이하게 되는 몰락 과정은 편혜영의 「재와 빨강」 을 통해 잘 드러나 있다. 대단한 사건이나 기승전결의 흐름 없이 전개된 「재와 빨강」은 익명의 ‘그’가 재난이 일상화된 C국으로 파견되어 파국을 맞는 과정을 그려간다. 그가 보여주는 파괴적인 행위들은 재난이 일상화된 개개인의 단면이다. 체념이든 냉소든 균열을 보인 일상을 회복하기란 쉽지 않고 그것이 곧 우리의 멀지않은 미래임을 그리고 있다. 재난을 관광화한 다크 투어리즘의 세계를 통해 그보다 더한 절망을 윤고은의 「밤의 여행자들」은 보여준다. 자본의 논리에 따라 맺어진 관계들이 쓰나미라는 실재의 재난을 맞아 더욱 굳어지는 악순환의 과정이 드러난다. 그럼에도 자본의 고리를 끊으려는 주인공의 행위가 실패로 돌아간데 반해 맹그로브 숲에서 살아남은 원주민들의 연대와 공동체 구성은 하나의 작은 대안처럼 보인다. 인간만이 생태계에 존재하는 냥 돌아가는 시스템과 서로를 불신하며 일상이 언제 무너져 내릴지 몰라 공포에 떨고 있는 개인과 그것마저 이용하여 상품화화는 대한민국 혹은 글로벌한 세상이 이대로 괜찮은지를 이 소설들은 재난이라는 극적인 상황을 통해 성찰한다.
