The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to examine the probability of L1 transfer to the target language (TL: Korean) learning and acquisition and 2) to what extent suprasegmentals would affect the TL fluency. For data collection, the participants (n=40) in this study from four different language backgrounds - English, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean - were asked to read sentences written in Korean, and all the participants’ oral outputs were recorded for the later analysis. Ten Korean native speakers analyzed and rated the participants’ TL outputs, focusing on suprasegmental cues. The results of this study show that the TL patterns of suprasegmentals seem to be influenced by L1 systems meaningfully, in which each suprasegmental cue appears to have different cue weight in fluency decision. Generally, Japanese learners of Korean show higher scores of L2 fluency. Also, statistical regression analysis shows that speech rate is somewhat distinctive powerful phonetic cue in the fluency judgment, but both spectral cues of the F0 range and amplitude show the least. At the end of this study, some implications for Korean education were discussed.
