The present study aims to examine the effectiveness of pronunciation instruction on suprasegmentals by measuring participants’ perception and production, and further to investigate whether the improvement, if any, lasts. 17 Korean graduate students who registered in a pronunciation workshop participated in the study. Before the suprasegmentals instruction, a pretest on perception and production was conducted. During pronunciation training, suprasegmentals were taught for 5 days, 100 minutes each, for a total of 8.3 hours. Emphasis was on suprasegmental features of pronunciation that included clusters and liaisons, content and function words, phrasing, rhythm and
intonation. The posttest on perception and production was administered at the end of the pronunciation workshop. To see the maintenance of the effects, the participants took a delayed test (both on perception and production) five weeks after the posttest. The findings revealed that students’ perception and production on suprasegmentals significantly improved after the instruction, and the effect of the pronunciation training on students’ perception and production lasted until five weeks later. The findings imply that explicit instruction helps students be aware of the role of suprasegmentals and to attain important features of suprasegmentals.
