‘White Man’, Endo Shusaku’s an initial novel, depicts the motives for my evil deeds and the internal conflicts of consciousness. As a resistance to the puritanical mother, ‘I’ pursued ‘the logic of evil’ through physical pleasure. The basis of this logic was just ‘Jangsenism’. ‘The logic of evil’ of Jangsenism includes a Buddhist pantheistic spirit of the Japanese and is also linked to their own pure land ideology. Through setting up a character of ‘I’ who was fascinated by Jangsenism, I think that Endo metaphorically described the Japanese that fell in pantheism.
My evil deeds were revenge on the owner of ‘phantasm’ and a means of pursuing human integrity. But ‘the logic of evil’ could not break ‘the logic of good’ as a phantasm and ‘I’ fell into a serious conflict. My psychological conflict and resignation were expressed through the depiction of the fly’s actions and the song of Marie Therese. Also, the writing of the memoirs on my past behavior can never be explained without being aware of the existence of God and seeking its absoluteness.
This work comprises three axes - ‘I’ who committed evil deeds in the past, another ‘I’ who write the memoirs with feelings of regret in the present, and the existence of God. Through his work, Endo suggested the possibility that the existence of God and human’s will can be connected.
