This interdisciplinary study investigated the developmental stages of Systemic functional linguistics (SFL) as a macro-sociolinguistic framework. In accordance with the in-depth review of the literature in SFL and the relevant fields, this study stipulated that the first stage has the original social ideas that were developed for English-native speakers from poorer classes to mitigate social inequality through the academic genres acquisition. Many macro-sociolinguistic ideas were based not only on the systems approach, but also on Marxism. In the second stage, at the current moment, we discussed the context of non-native English language development in a non-English environment and many World Englishes (Halliday, 2003). The problem of English promotion in non-western countries did not appear explicitly, but now SFL probably faces a context of globalization and distribution of English outside the English-speaking world. From this point of view, the current SFL version - genre-based approach – carries a risk of cultural conflicts and requires some alterations to spread outside the West. Additionally, we may support Halliday’s proposals to create the versions of Englishes for non-Western countries, considering their mentality and culture.
