The Gao Gang Affair was not the anti-Party intrigue of Gao Gang for his seizing the Power but the unintended consequence of Mao Zedong’s rearrangement of Yan’an regime. For the purpose of centralizing the decentralized power relationships in the Yan’an regime and solving the conflicts for the socialist development routs after the founding of PRC, Mao tried to rearrange the Yan’an regime, the ultimate goal of which was to change his successor Liu Shaoqi. Mao succeeded to centralize the decentralized power relationships and to change the New Democratic route to General line of transitional period. But he could not change his successor because of the factional coalitions structure of Yan’an regime. On the contrary, Gao Gang who had attempted to overthrow Liu for serving to the Mao’s will, was purged because of his breaking the Party’s organizational rule. The result was the stabilizing of the Liu as Mao’s successor and resolidifying the Yan’an regime. The factional coalitions structure of Yan’an regime was so solid that its changing should have to result in a catastrophe. It means that its solidity was the power structural origin of the Cultural Revolution.
