Belgic Confession(= BC, 1561), drawn by Guido de Bès (1522-1567) the martyr, is one of the ‘Three forms of Unity’ for Dutch Reformed Churches. This Confession was produced by de Brès in order to publicly provide systematized Christian beliefs and apologetics to his fellow Christians in low-countries. Through the perusal from the first article to the last article, we can concur that the conviction this Confession holds is thoroughly reformed in its character.
In this paper, I examined the articles 2 to 7 in which contained the doctrine of the Holy Scripture. In second section, I explored the backgrounds and the structure of the entire of BC. Then, I illustrated a brief context where the Doctrine of Holy Scripture arose. Thirdly, I analyzed the articles 2 to 7 accordingly. In the article 2, it is confessed how we can know God through the explanation of the two means for cognitio Dei: the general revelation and special revelation. In the third article, the confession explains the Written Word of God. The fourth article enumerates the Canonical Books of the Holy Scripture. To some, it may be found very surprising that the Lamentation of Jeremiah is missing in the list of the Canonical Books. In the article 5, the authority of Holy Scripture and how this authority is recognized are described. Here, we encounter the reformed doctrine of inner testimony of the Holy Spirit and autopistia of the Holy Scripture. Everyone can see that the Apocryphal books are enumerated in the article 6. However, we observe a tolerable perspective to some extent in contrast to the standard of the Westminster Confession. The sixth article of Belgic Confession declares manifestly that the Apocryphal books have no doctrinal authority. Lastly, the article 7 demonstrates the reformed doctrine of the perfectio and sufficientia of Holy Scripture. In other words, Scripture is sufficient for our faith and for salvation.
As a result of this study, we can conclude that the doctrine of Holy Scripture contained in BC is in line with the thoroughly reformed viewpoint expressed in the French Confession (Confessio Fidei Gallicana) and Beza’s Confession.
