This thesis discusses the morpheme of an animal vocabulary CHUI(rat), which is one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac, and its semantic characteristics are considered specifically in terms of cultural history. It describes the meaning of the root word CHUI in general as well as in specific cases, focusing its description on the morphology of the morpheme, CHUI, and the passages from sayings, adages, and fables. To begin with, the morpheme CHUI is an abbreviation of CHU IEE, IEE being a suffix with the phonological properties of restricting the initial syllable`s final vowel realization. The etymology of the modern Korean word CHUI is as follows; CHUT, CHUL, CHU RI, CHUIEE, and finally to CHUI. Secondly, compound nouns which have the suffix CHUI are KOM CHUI (a kind of rat), TA RAM CHUI (a squirrel), SE ANG CHUI (a mouse), and CHIP CHUI (a house mouse), The derivatives of the prefix CHUI are more diverse than that of the suffix CHUI. Finally, the semantic analysis of CHUI has an affirmative aspect and a negative aspect as well. In Oriental mythology, it meant `prudence`, in folklore, it represents deity, property, and fecundity and in social customs, it refers to north in terms of directions, 11 to 1 at night in its use representing time of a day. The negative aspects are as follows ; In the Orient, it can mean shrewd, a thief, a sycophant, greedy, weakness, or tyranny and in the West, destruction, death, and meanness.
