Although many Koreans learning the German language have good grammatical knowledge about the German language, they have more difficulties in pronunciation than other foreign students. Above all, they have difficulties in learning the pronunciation of unfamiliar sounds such as a minimal pair of r and l. These difficulties arise more frequently from the productive side than on the perceptive one. As the causes of difficulties in pronunciation, there are linguistic and extralinguistic factors for the phonetic/phonological difficulties of the Koreans learning the German language, including psychological, motoric, prosodic, etc. Hirschfeld (1994: 23) also referred to both linguistic and extralinguistic factors as causes of pronunciation errors. Interference is credited with the influence of the mother tongue(L1) or already acquired foreign languages(L2) on the target language. Among various areas for research such as perception (understanding)/production (pronunciation), linguistic factors/ extralinguistic factors, and segmental level/suprasegmental level, this study focuses on production(pronuncia tion), linguistic factors, and segmental level. The causes of pronunciation errors and variants will be examined by the contrastive analysis of the Korean and the German languages on the segmental level of phonology. Various experimental researches should be needed to overcome the productive deviations of Koreans learning the German language. (Halle University)
