This study analyzed Korean EFL learners’ usage patterns of cohesive devices across three writing genres. Specifically, the usage patterns of conjunctions in narrative writing produced by intermediate and low-level participants were compared. The analysis of the data showed that the mean differences between the two groups in terms of frequency rates of conjunctions in narrative writing were not statistically significant. The overall mean differences of intermediate-level participants`` conjunction use in narrative and descriptive writing were not statistically significant, whereas the mean differences of low-level participants’ conjunction use in narrative and expository writing were statistically significant. Detailed analysis of quantitative and qualitative data indicated that the current participants were not necessarily influenced by their English proficiency levels or by genre when using conjunctions. The research findings are expected to provide language instructors and researchers with in-depth information about nonnative writers’ usage patterns of conjunctions.
