The purpose of this study was to explore the current situation in living environment of small-sized residential facilities for people with disabilities in the U. S. in order to find out the ways to develop sustainable and desirable living options to improve their independence and to achieve social mix with local community. This study selected 5 facilities located in Boston area at Massachusettes based on funding, management, types of residents, types of housing, tenure types etc. The researcher visited and evaluated the living environment of the case facilities and also, interviewed developers, housing managers, other staffs and residents. The findings were suggested in terms of selection of location, neighborhood/local community networking, design and services for improving residents’ independence and creating home-like atmosphere.
