This study was to explore the probability of using a book club for the development of reading and debate ability among undergraduates. This study investigated the participants in ‘2015 Hallym University Symbious Book Club’ in regard to their motivations to attend, reading topics of interest, and plans to perform reading activities. On the basis of the investigation, the ultimate goal of this study was to make suggestions for an effective management of a book club with autonomy and durability for the pedagogical purposes. According to the investigation, the participants seemed to understand the value of reading and debate ability. However, most of them appeared to have problems choosing books or topics appropriate for them. First, this study suggested that reading and debate activities be compatible with the reading process. Also, a book club using an evaluational and creative reading process needs to select debate themes consistently. Finally, this study suggested that to secure autonomy and durability, a book club should have a prior mentoring, a reconstitution of a must-reading list and a guide book, and a reading to debate program.
