The Purpose of this article is to analyze popular understanding of democracy in seven Southeast Asian countries(Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia). The data used in this study are the Third Survey(2010-2012) results provided by the Asian Barometer Projects. Some meaningful findings of this study are as follows: first, popular understanding of basic principles and characteristics of democracy in Southeast Asia is somewhat different from those of western liberal democracy. Second, popular understanding of democracy in the Philippines is quite negative comparing to another six countries in this study. Third, regarding differences among political regimes, popular understanding in both one-party authoritarianism(Vietnam, Cambodia) and electoral authoritarianism(Malaysia, Singapore) is more positive than that in electoral democracy(Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia) in terms of "citizen empowerment and political support", "trust in institution", and "satisfaction with government and democracy". Fourth, considering all those findings of popular understanding of democracy in seven countries, the future of western liberal democracy in the region is not promising at all.
