애니메이션은 어릴 적 가장 접하기 쉬운 문화 매체 중 하나이며, 이러한 애니메이션의 캐릭터는 젠더 정체성을 형성하는 데 영향을 준다. 그 중 디즈니 애니메이션은 장르가 다양하고 여성 캐릭터의 정체성 변화를 알 수 있다. 1937년 제작된 ‘백설 공주와 일곱 난쟁이’에서 백설 공주처럼 순종적이고 가정적이며 왕자와의 결혼으로 인해 자신의 정체성을 들어내는 캐릭터에서부터 1998년 ‘뮬란’에서 뮬란처럼 자기주장이 강하고 지혜로우며 영웅의 모습을 보여주는 캐릭터까지에 이르렀다. 하지만, 결말에서는 늘 남성 캐릭터와 만나 이루어지는 부분을 강조하고 있다. 그에 비해, 2013년에 제작된 ‘겨울 왕국’은 남성 캐릭터가 등장함에도 불구하고 결론적으로는 자매의 사랑으로 마무리가 지어지며 행복의 끝이 꼭 결혼이 아니라는 것을 이야기한다. 이러한 여성 캐릭터의 정체성 변화로 인해 전통적인 여성관과 현대적인 여성관에게 어떠한 영향을 끼치는지에 대해 조사하고자 한다.
