The goal of this paper is to historically analyze the perception of the Joseon language(Joseoneo, Korean) that actually appeared in Joseon’s English language periodicals from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. English language periodicals analyzed here include “The Korean Repository” and “The Korean Review”. Inherent in these periodicals, which were published by foreign missionaries to increase awareness of Joseon, is the viewpoint and knowledge of the western researchers who knew of the Joseon language at th at time.
The perception that western missionaries who contributed both directly and indirectly to these two periodicals had of the Joseon language broke free of the general orientalist perspective which was disparaging Joseon on an ideological and shallow level, in that they attempted to understand the Joseon language. Also, as for the perception of the disputed Korean etymology and the origin of the Hunminjeongeum, and the perception of Romanization, research and interest towards such topics were not yet universal at that time, and they became a stimulus to the Joseon people.
In particular, the effort and interest shown in these two English periodicals towards the Hunminjeongeum showed an exclusion of the scholars who had hindered the Western missionaries. This also turned into an opportunity to increase the Joseon people’s recognition of their language and writings, and through their original goal of translating the Bible into Hangul, contributed to the convenience of the missionary work as well.
These two English periodicals offered ethnographic information about Joseon, which had not yet become widely known, and the Joseon language. This can be seen as an early form of the western-centric field of Korean studies. In that sense, while there were some aspects of the Western missionaries understanding of Joseon and the Joseon language that was lacking in exquisiteness and substantiveness, that fact that a modern appearance was shown makes their work a subject to be described as part of early Korean language history studies.
