Architectural education is facing a paradigm shift in the context of our convergence-overwhelmed society. As the first type of convergence education for professionals dealing with art and technology, it has consistently emphasized creativity, insight, storytelling, and communication for diverse groups, which are considered essential qualifications for any kind of job. That is why architects are considered the most prepared and sustainable professionals in the age of automation and artificial intelligence. Two pilot studios of the University of Seoul are introduced in this article as examples of interdisciplinary and convergence education in the context of restructuring curricula to meet the paradigm shift in architectural education. “Regenerating the Urban Village Studio” was a collaborative project among students majoring in architecture, urban planning, and urban sociology. Through exposure to the diverse aspects of the village design process, such as the autonomy of the community group, development of a community program and business model, focus group interviews, and infra design, the students acquired the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds as well as people in the community. “Green Remodeling-Green Facade Studio” was an integrative project in which students applied the knowledge they gained from theory courses(“Design and Structure” and “Sustainable Architecture”) in the context of the high demand for green remodeling after the building boom in early 1990’s driven by critical energy policy changes. The students developed a facade design by analyzing and calculating the load in the real world to come up with a specific assembly design that was to be produced through a 3D printer. During this process, various types of environmental simulation software were tested through a self-directed learning process to improve energy performance. Through this project, students were exposed to a new way of producing built environments in the age of information, and they explored possibilities for unknown niches in the expanded architectural field. Architects are expected to expand the boundaries of the profession to deal with new problems in the ever-changing context, including urban issues as well as everyday product design problems. Therefore, architectural education needs to focus on training creative generalists who are capable of collecting and analyzing enormous amounts of data and producing creative solutions optimizing appropriate technology as well as innovative techniques to achieve the ultimate goal of the profession: improving the living environment for human beings. This is definitely for the most desired qualification for anyone who wants to be prepared for the unknown society of the future.
