This study examined the relative effects of positive and negative social relationships and corrective efforts on life satisfaction in a comparative way of men and women, using the data set of 『2009 National Survey Research of Multicultural Family』conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. Major findings are first, women’s levels of life satisfaction, relationship with Koreans, and satisfaction with family relationship were significantly higher than the men’s; men’s levels of Korean language skills, discrimination, relationship with people from their own country were relatively higher. Second, for both men and women, life satisfaction showed positive associations with relationship with Koreans. Women’s life satisfaction was negatively associated with the length of residency in Korea and discrimination, and positively associated with relationship with people from their own country and with satisfaction with family relationship. Third, adding discrimination variables as negative social relationship to personal factors was significant for women, then adding positive social relationship variables increased relatively higher explanatory power for women’s satisfaction with life. Finally, in explaining life satisfaction, social relationship with Koreans demonstrated significant effects for men. For women, satisfaction with family relationship, relationship with Koreans, relationship with people from the same country, efforts to correct discrimination demonstrated significant effects. Based on these findings, discussions and implications for multicultural social work practice and research were suggested.
