Textual studies for classics are genernally considered as objective works to restore vanishing great tradition. But who makes the tradition different from the non-tradition? It may be the Textual studies to determine and construct the tradition.
Luxun, who devoted his own time and passion, was not regretful that “the Great and Upright tradition” had been vanishing. Contrarily, he was concerned with the ugly voices which had been oppressed and excluded by “the Great and Upright tradition”. It was the reason that he did not acknowledge the authority of wood-block prints and affirm the fluidity of manuscripts. Luxun penetrated the ideological desire of traditional textual studies, and tried to discover and revive the “useless and ugly things”.
This paper examines Luxun’s copying old books from a philological point. Writing short stories and copying old books are same meaning in nature to Luxun. Through the philological works, he could discover and revive the deleted “useless and meaningless” things in history. Luxun’s philological works are not exclusion and restoration, but discovery and revival.
