Textbooks to be used in teaching is a mediator of teachers and learners.
Also, reliance and the importance of textbooks is very large. This is because the specific activities performed in connection with the subject to be learned in each lesson.
Illustrations data presented in textbooks is expected to give more impact than a sentence. Because young children not yet fully developed the ability to understand the sentence.
This study analyzes the changes of illustrations in Elementary geography textbooks compiled under Governor-General of Korea. You can see the change in the description of the geographical area with the change of illustration through chronological change.
As a result, pictures and photos account for 65% of the illustration data. Pictures and photos were not being limited to the position or size standard. It was used reproductions of engravings and shown by the enlarged portion or emphasize more finely depicted.
Maps account for 11.4% of the illustrations data as the most critical data geography textbook illustrations. Mainly it has been used to build only the position and the range of each region. It is widely used normal maps such a topographic map and special map of showing the location of the war took place.
Chart account for 12.6% of the illustration data. The number of graphs were used, later, the pie charts were used to the description of area.
Distributions accounted for 11% of the illustrations data. It was used to indicate the state of the industry or product spread.
In general, that were used maps in the introduction and motivation of each section, pictures and photos in the Highlighting of the theme of the lesson, Charts in the provide information and description, distributions in the visual function showing the range of the subject.
Korean children in colonial were educated geography information, which is central of the Empire of Japan by showing the different types of illustration materials.
