This study explores the relationship between population aging and age-friendliness in 226 local governments in Korea, by using a path analysis as its major research method. Data was collected from the database managed under the section of regional statistics and e-regional indicators in the Statistics Korea. Local governments’ age friendliness was measured on the basis of 10 variables including one elderly leisure facility, three home care facilities, three elderly care facilities, one cultural facility, bed hospitals, and parks. Local governments’ demographic aging differed significantly in terms of geographic characteristics. Rural areas, referred to as Gun, has already turned into the super-aged society. However, the aged society has been yet to come in urban areas, or Gu. This study showed that population aging was positively associated with age friendly variables such as elderly leisure facility, cultural facility, and bed hospitals characterized as cross-generation friendliness. However, population aging was negatively associated with the variables including elder friendliness variables such as home care facilities and elderly care facilities. The population aging affect the welfare budget variable. However, the welfare budget did not necessarily influence on all age friendliness variable. The welfare budget showed a positive association with a couple of elder friendliness variables such as home nursing services and group home care services for older persons.
