This study aims to analyze the subjective expectation and the meaning of AIP of the elderly in rural area. Generally It is known that there are more barriers to AIP in rural communities than in urban areas. However, this study points out that the elderly in rural area shows positive expectations and meanings to AIP. Using data drawn from in-depth interviews of 60 senior citizens in 3 areas, it suggests the reasons why they need and desire AIP more than the elderly in urban area do. They are as follows: The first reason relates to the familiar physical environments. The ‘place’ is closely connected with one’s identity. The familiar environments provide rural elderly with a sense of control over their daily life. The second reason is linked to their close relationship with their neighbors, which is intensified in rural circumstances. Solidarity with the neighbors is the factor which offsets the disadvantage of physical environments in rural area. The good neighbourliness also gave them a sense of control over their daily life. The last one is connected to the fact that they can continue their work regardless of their age. The elderly generally experience career interruption. But the elders in rural area can continue to work in agriculture regardless of their age and it makes them enjoy independence and unceased career in their life. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to take a communitarian orientation and integrative approach, not fragmented and positivistic, in the research of AIP.
