It is a traditional dichotomy between Kant’s ethics and virtue ethics that the former emphasize rules and actions while the latter does virtues and character. However this dichotomy has been criticized and so it has appeared as a crucial issue whether the so-called disagreement between Kant and Aristotle is just the result of some distortions and exaggerations or the real disagreement. The purpose of this study is to investigate that issue by comparing Kant’s conceptions of virtue with Aristotle’s. For this I shall examine what Kant’s virtue means in its relation to a good will and then insist that it has a crucial characteristic of being subordinate to moral laws and based on the priority of the right. And I shall show that Aristotle’s conception of virtue does not have such a characteristic and that the disagreement between the two conceptions of virtue is verified by Kant’s criticism on Aristotle’s doctrine of the mean. Furthermore I shall insist that Kant’s conception of virtue permits practical judgments with partiality, and not being true of the indeterminacy that Aristotle’s virtue ethics is considered to fall into.
