This study aims to understand the trend of Western art which enjoyed rapid growth in Korea during the 1930s amid the burgeoning relationship between new artists and high school art teachers, and the influence of those teachers. Young artists who majored in Western painting at art colleges in Japan returned to Korea and became art teachers, a relatively stable occupation at that time. Through public educational courses and special activities, they induced the quantitative growth of Western art circles by encouraging students. Thus the growth of student-artists is largely attributable to the capability of these art teachers. Under the educational situation of the modern Joseon period, when the number of Western painting graduates was greater than that of graduates from the college of education who had a teaching certificate in art, artists who were active in art circles mainly offered art education, enabling them to establish a more direct relationship with potential artists.
After 1930, the presentation of awards for Western-style artworks grew significantly at the Joseon Art Exhibitions, and students’ participation increased accordingly. This study will also investigate the student art exhibitions that were held during a similar period when student artists advanced into art circles. It is hoped that the results of this study will shed light on the training period of modern artists, reveal the existence of student artists among the award winners in the category of Western painting at the Joseon Art Exhibitions, and show the various layers of Western art circles that existed during the modern period in Korea.
This study also investigates the relationship between art teachers and student painters at distinguished private schools in Gyeongseong, such as Choong Ang, Whimoon and Jungdong High Schools, as well as at Jeil and Jei High Schools, Normal Schools whose students won awards at both student exhibitions and the Joseon Art Exhibitions. It also focuses on their painting styles and activities in art circles during the 1930s. In the case of the category of Oriental painting at the Joseon Art Exhibition, most award winners resided in Gyeongseong, whereas winners in the category of Western painting came from across the nation. This proves that there was a strong correlation between public art education and the advent of regional art circles. Despite the limitations in collecting data and the limited availability of artworks due to geographical circumstances, this study will contribute to understanding the modern art circles that were formed by art students and teachers, and particularly by the painters Im Yong-ryeon from Jeongju and Seon U-dam from Haeju.
