This paper attempts to investigate Charlotte Smith’s The Emigrants with emphasis on the solidarity between the “abandoned mothers” in the text. In the period when motherhood was celebrated as an instinctive emotion, Smith’s poem rejects the prevalent view of motherhood and foregrounds the political and economic factors that threaten the “abandoned mothers.” As Smith herself suffered from the hardships arising from her marital failure and materially deprived condition, the speaker of The Emigrants reveals a strong sense of bond between herself and various mother figures in the text. Also, The Emigrants expresses anger toward the social circumstances, which alienate women from political power and continue to oppress them. Smith’s representation of the “suffering globe” bleeding from her breast criticizes patriarchal militarism. At the end of the poem, her final conversion of “fraternity” into “peace” as one of the ultimately revolutionary agendas conveys her disbelief in “fraternity” defined exclusively as male bonding.
