This study examines how organizations can realize desired outcomes through strategic change. We ask (1) how does the timing of change influence firm performance, and (2) how is the relationship between the timing of strategic change and firm performance moderated by the level of strategic change? We conceptualize strategic change as the diversification-refocusing dimension variation over time. An analysis of data covering 2000 to 2012 drawn from Korea’s IT service industry suggests an inverted U-shaped curvilinear relationship between the pace of strategic change and firm performance. The data show that a regular rhythm of strategic change has a positive relationship with firm performance. We further investigate the moderating effects of level of strategic change on the relationship between the pace and rhythm of strategic change and firm performance. The results indicate that balancing the pace of strategic change is important and companies that change regularly outperform those that change irregularly. Finally, the results indicate that the level of strategic change moderates the change-performance relationship. The study discusses the theoretical and practical implications of these findings and offers research ideas for future studies.
