There were many Koguryeo figures who moved over to Tang, after the fall of Koguryeo. Among them, examined in this article are those who assumed Chinese last names, and argued that they actually originated from China.
Since the 5<SUP>th</SUP> century, many Chinese[漢人] figures appeared in the highest echelons of the Koguryeo leadership, so we should not dismiss the refugees’ aforementioned arguments as intentions to falsely present genealogical facts. At the same time, we should also be aware that the sense of admiration[慕華] (of Chinese civilization) displayed in the tomb epitaphs in the Tang era may have been -in some cases anyway- part of a deliberate strategic choice on the part of the house whose family member was buried in the tomb in question which would have had to integrate a level of political and social ‘decoration’ of facts in the contents of the tomb epitaph meant for the deceased.
So it is rather hard to extract their true identity from genealogy records of this sort. And the fact that one displayed a sense of Chinese admiration or seemingly falsified its origin as a Chinese should not be considered as a reason to rule one out from the ‘Koguryeo refugee’ category. Considering all this, some Koguryeo refugees who moved over to Tang and claimed their ‘Chinese heritage’ should be examined as part of the former Koguryeo population who were on the move at the time.
