Over the last 30 years since China’s reform and opening up, Chinese literature has changed drastically. Such a change stemmed from various causes, but among which, the influence of ‘media’ is not small at all. Since the reform and opening up, Chinese literature has gradually transformed itself into a new form under the mutual overlapping and competition of ‘print media’, ‘image media’, and ‘internet media.’ ‘Pure literature,’ that is to say, ‘literature for literature’ ideology that Chinese literature has adhered to since the 1980s has slowly lost its influence under the flow of ‘visualization’ and ‘industrialization’ of literature. In addition, with the appearance of internet media, the Chinese literature has become more popularized, open, and de-authoritative.
This study mentioned ‘craze for internet literature’ that brought about ‘Wangshuo phenomenon’ in the late 1980s, ‘Bulaohu fever’ in the early 1990s, and both new vitality and concern to the Chinese literary circles in the 2000s, in order to analyze the change in literature since the reform and opening up from the perspective of ‘media.’ These phenomena symbolize that the Chinese modern literature which had dominated China since the New Culture Movement on May 4, 1919 is beginning to disappear from the center stage of history. Even so, we shouldn’t overestimate the good points of new literary tendencies by disparaging the significance and value of Chinese modern literature. Future research and consideration on literature-media should be based on ‘dialectic attitude’ that leans to neither optimism nor pessimism by taking a close look at the advantages and disadvantages of literature-media while acknowledging that it is a historical trend that cannot go against a new flow of literature that is born and grown by the influence of various media.
