The purpose of this study was to identify the most desirable performance assessment procedure to achieve the objective of physical education class by analyzing the effect of performance assessment procedure on the learning of overhand toss in volleyball. One hundred and fifty middle school boys in the third grade participated in the experiment as subjects, and were randomly assigned to four groups student-leaded in which the students determined the test period, teacher-leadter-1 in which the lessons and tests were performed alternatively, teacher-leaded-2 in which the test period was preceded by lessons, and control which was not informed of the performance assessment. Subjects in all groups participated in 7 classes, during which 5 tests of the overhand toss were performed: a pre-test, three performance assessments, and a post-test. Analysis of the number of toss in pre- and post tests revealed a significant interaction of group and test session. While there was no difference among groups in the pre-test, the student-leaded and the teacher-leaded-2 groups performed significantly better than other groups in the post-test. In terms of improvement between test sessions, the student-leaded and the teacher-leaded-2 groups also showed larger changes than other groups. For the analysis of the number of overhand toss in performance assessments, main effects of the group and test session were significant. Post-hoc test on the effect of group revealed that the teacher-leaded-2 group performed better than other groups which were not different from each other. Post-hoc test on the effect of test session indicated that the test scores increased with the test session. Taken together, these results suggest that the performance assessments may have a positive effect on the achievement level of students, and tests given at the periods determined by students or consecutively after lessons are the most effective for enhancing the learning process.
