Purpose: The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze several statistical methods widely used in the continuous data of a two group pre-post design.
Method: To the end, the statistical analyses were made using generated data and the methods, in particular, were evaluated from the perspective of longitudinal study.
Results: T-test on the change scores, univariate and multivariate repeated measures ANOVA, and mixed model produced identical results on group×time interaction, but ANCOVA result was opposite. Such conflicting results are mostly obtained in observational studies in which subject assignment is not randomized. The reason is that ANCOVA has different characteristics from other analysis methods in that it is a conditional analysis assuming pre-test values are the same.
Conclusion: The data of two group pre-post design should be considered as a special case of longitudinal data. Correlation exists between pre-test and post-test values because measurements were taken from the same subjects at different times. Furthermore, variance is generally larger for post-test data than that of pre-test. From a longitudinal research perspective, mixed-model is better because it takes into account these characteristics and has many advantages.
