Jugye-bujeong Yi Sim-Won, the great-grand child of the Tae-jong, the 3rd king of Choson. He was the man of integrity in his way of study even though he could not get any political position because he was the descendent of the king.
He had lived the era when the Meritorious(Hun-gu) monopolized the power in the court and the royal family who were appointed by King Se-jo(7th king) took a role in diverse fields.
When A Queen dowager and Hun-gu met the unexpected death of the 9th king, they had declared the little grandson of King Se-jo as 9th king Seong-jong. Now, new king was under the control of Queen dowager and Hun-gu.
But when new king had grew up, he needed his own sovereignty without the old power. It was kind of sudden change of political situation.
At this moment, Yi Sim-Won addressed a memorial to king that Hun-gu should be expelled from the court. His remarks caused the strong opposition of Hun-gu and gained agreement of the Literati(Sa-rim). The incident what triggered of violent conflict between Hun-gu and Sa-rim.
In the course of the situation, Yi Sim-Won reveal the conspiracy that his grandfather Bosung-gun and uncle Yim Sa-Hong conspired the change of prince’s succession for intercepting inheritance. Bosung-gun and Yim Sa-Hong beared malice against Sim-Won for his revealing and asked king to punish him with his unfilial conduct.
Bosung-gun and Hun-gu blamed Yi Sim-Won’s disrespect which was insubstantial. But King Seong-jong under the control of Hun-gu could not rescue Yi from this trouble even though he knew Yi’s innocent.
Consequently, Yi who got the name of integrity was exiled to distance province with dishonor of ‘unfilial son’
Yi’s grandfather, Bosung-gun and Yi’s uncle Yim Sa-Hong who intrigued to break the rule of succession lied to punish their innocent scion with sin.
Actually, Bosung-gun was an ‘unfilial son’ itself because he disobey his father’s decision on royal succession problem.
After returning from 7 year banishment, Yi Sim-Won could regain his royal name upon the support of King and showed his scholarly acquisition.
King had developed his own authority for years and could oppress Hun-gu who strongly asserted Yi’s punishment.
Yi Sim-Won communicated with Sarim and shared his study and values on Confucianism. He fostered the younger generation and tried to fulfill the virtue of Confucianism by himself.
He, however, was entrapped and died with his two sons from Yim sahong’s scheme in tyrant Yonsan’s reign.
He followed the way of Confucianism and devoted himself to keep the loyalty on King. In other words, Yi Sim-Won’s was not the ‘unfilial son’ but the ‘integrity literati’
His royalty and integrity was published and praised by Kings and the literaties.
Yi Sim-Won was the victim of conflict between Hun-gu and Sarim and the symbol of honor at the same time.
