This paper examines how Yi Si-won and Yi Geon-chang, representative scholars of the Ganghwa School in late 19th century Joseon Korea, perceived their time and how they coped with reality. The Ganghwa School establishes a theoretical base from Yangming Studies. Therefore, what this research investigates is also related to the role of Yangming Studies in resolving the difficulties faced by Joseon in its closing period. Yi Si-won protested against injustice by taking his own life when the Ganghwa fortress was seized by the French army in 1866. Yi dismissed the West as barbarians and took an averse attitude to them. His faithful mind is the unique spirit of Confucianism descended from Confucius and Mencius; therefore, we can not say Yi Si-won's faithful mind was solely influenced by Yangming Studies. What deserves to be emphasized regarding Yi Si-won is that, as a Ganghwa School scholar in the line of the Young Doctrine who had been withdrawn from mainstream politics, he put his faithful mind of Confucianism into practice in person. Indebted to Yi Si-won, the Ganghwa School was able to firmly secure their academic position among other schools of thought. Yi Geon-chang more clearly reveals the spirit of the Ganghwa School, which is based on the Sincere Mind and values actual effects produced by practice in real-life situations. He understands the Sincere Mind as sincerity(誠,) real principle(實理), and true heart(眞心). This spirit of the Ganghwa School serves as a fundamental principle of Yi Geon-chang's academic activities and thoughts on governance. Adhering to this principle, he refutes the conservative stance of Defending Orthodoxy and Rejecting Heterodoxy(衛正斥邪). In addition, he criticizes the Enlightenment party for depending on foreign powers and upholds independent reform. Furthermore, in his academic activities, he absorbs various thoughts critically and builds his own intellectual world.
