The film industry has spent a huge amount of capital and has developed by leaps and bounds as a cultural industry. Despite this, discussions and studies about writing new scripts have been considered very challenging. In recent years, even if Hollywood has been called the factory of dreams, remakes and sequels for good movies are plentiful and are, in essence, self-plagiarism and just variations of the original good movies. An example is Marvel movies. Like the comics, the movies have become serialized and this is expected to continue on an increasing basis.
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss non-linearity story-telling manners in writing scripts, instead of the traditional linear manner of script writing. This will be done through the analysis of the following: <The Butterfly Effect> (2004) directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber; and <Edge of Tomorrow> (2014) directed by Doug Liman. This study compares the non-linear, non-narrative multi-branching structure that is common to these two films in particular.
Aristotle"s Poetics was the seed for the three-act narrative style (beginning, middle, and conclusion) that is used in modern writing to deal with time and space systematically. This study focuses on the method of how a story passes, and where various elements are placed within the story, instead of just a "what happened to someone" style of story telling.
Traditional story telling methods only focus on plot and characters. Therefore, the researcher in this thesis focuses on linear writing that has not been discussed or studied at length. The aim is to aid in non-linearity non-narrative story-telling creation and is expected to further studies within the field with Interactive elements.
