This paper attempts to show how Wordsworth"s "Tintern Abbey" proposes the relationship between human beings and nature as a communicative one, which I interpret as the mode of ecological consciousness. In the poem, Wordsworth dramatizes that both humans and nonhumans are relational selves. The relationship between the speaker and the Wye landscape represented in "Tintern Abbey" signifies the I/You relationship which overcomes the I/It relation and embodies the mode of ecological consciousness. Wordsworth is conscious of the interaction between the independence and interdependence of humans and nonhumans. He implies that we cannot impose a human instrumental interest on nature. He suggests that nature exists according to the principle of nature-in-itself that goes forward to the principle of nature-for-itself. The ecological consciousness that the poet presents through the I/You encounter would be conducive to the formation of an ecologically oriented community.
