William Hogarth (1697~1764), who was active in the 18th century during the English Age of Enlightenment, became famous for his many series of satirical works known as “Modern Moral Subjects,” which received a great response during his time. He created his last series, the Election (1754~1755), against the background of a parliamentary election in the county of Oxfordshire in 1754 that became mired in controversy due to corruption. Within this series, An Election Entertainment (1754), which was exhibited separately before the election, was not only the best-selling work but is intimately connected to English politics at the time because of the references to specific legislative bills and ideologies that it contains. The aim of this thesis is to consider afresh the political ideology reflected in An Election Entertainment, particularly with regard to patriotism and Anti-Catholicism, against the circumstances of the Seven Year"s War with France that Britain faced at the time.
Until recently, discussions of An Election Entertainment have gone no further than a simple interpretation of the work as a political satire criticizing a corrupt election. Such discussion has failed to analyze in detail each part of the work"s contents. The aim of this thesis was to break free from existing, simplistic interpretations and gain a detailed understanding of An Election Entertainment by means of a thorough pictorial analysis. This resulted in confirmation of the fact that the work strongly emphasizes patriotism and Anti-Catholicism. In other words, by depicting illegal electoral activity based on financial gain and the negative results of such corruption, the left and right sides of the picture convey a message of warning. The top and bottom parts of the picture, on the other hand, show a negative view of false patriotism and an Anti-Catholic attitude.
A highly prominent aspect of An Election Entertainment is the fact that, while the characters on its left and right sides depict electoral activity and are thus closely linked to the English tradition of political satires and the tradition of European paintings such as Jan Steen"s 17th-century genre painting, political ideology including Anti-Catholicism and patriotism that at first sight appears unrelated to the election but is the predominant sentiment among English people is expressed on the central axis of the canvas. The fact that other works in the series contain images that hint at national crisis, such as a past victory in a naval battle against Spain and a chariot bearing Britannia, a female personification of Britain, in trouble, tells us that An Election Entertainment goes beyond mere criticism of corrupt politics, ultimately expressing concerns about national security through images of a corrupt election.
In Britain at this time, active emphasis was being placed on nationalism and patriotism amid a heightened sense of tension before the Seven Year"s War with France. As the elements that distinguished Catholic France from Britain, Protestantism and liberty constituted the core of British identity. Britain regarded France as inferior because the latter believed in superstitious Catholicism and because the rules of the state changed according to orders of a despotic tyrant. It regarded itself, a state based on Protestantism and parliamentary government, as far superior to France. This emphatic placing of anti-Catholicism, nationalism, and patriotism at the forefront by Hogarth was a consequence of the contemporary demands of the Seven Year"s War.
The thesis concludes that, in terms of content, An Election Entertainment is a full-frontal emphasis of the patriotism and Anti-Catholicism of its time, and that in rhetorical terms it implies, by way of the corrupt election, the message of a national security crisis due to the Seven Year"s War with France and effectively demonstrates patriotic and Anti-Catholic sentiments urging unity and confrontation in order to defend Britain"s Protestantism and liberty against Catholic France.
