This thesis examines the establishment and expansion, characteristics as a new religion, and sociological connotations of Mary’s Ark of Salvation to identify its social connotation. The establishment and expansion of Mary’s Ark of Salvation is reconstructed on the basis of objective facts, and the characteristics as a new religion are analyzed in the light of concepts of Ellwood‘s new religion. Through the process, Mary’s Ark of Salvation does not seem to be classified as a new religion at the moment yet. However, it is also possible in the future for Mary’s Ark of Salvation to obtain its individual identity as a new religion as it is parting away form the orthodox hierarchy of the established church. Emphasizing the inspirational method of ‘grace experience,’ Mary’s Ark of Salvation offers its followers a dramatic conviction for salvation and thus gives them new stimuli to their static religious life. In the meanwhile, they are going apart from the magisterium of the church, neglecting the instructions from it. The social connotation of Mary’s Ark of Salvation is being examined in the relation of social changes of the religious market, and also studied with the cultural characteristics of post modern society. Mary’s Ark of Salvation is in sync with the very desire for instant fulfillment prevalent in Korean society, and it’s a phenomenon to show the anxieties and insecurities of modern society where the traditional authorities are being threatened. To sum up, the needs for prompt and immediate fulfillment for what they want make Mary’s Ark of Salvation much appealing to catholics, and it’s being a great replacement and substitute for them in a society losing traditional values. Also, the liturgical religious traditions in catholic church are deeping the situation in a way.
