This research attempts to investigate how the social value of arts has been reconstructed in community arts, through mainly researching the community orchestras in South Korea. Beyond excellency or personal benefits which are usually considered as traditional value of professional arts, the key value of community based arts activities would be explained through three distinct concepts; citizenship, locality and artistic value. With in-depth interviews of twelve members from six different community orchestras, the researchers discovered the harmony based on interpersonal relationships in each organization is one of the critical values regarding to operating the group. Moreover, it is found out that community solidarity with the local audiences as well as between the members makes each organization a cohesive group. In addition, the self-fulfilling artistic value is strongly connected to the motivation and satisfaction of their activities. In terms of the social value of arts, these findings are expected to be more developed in further researches of community based arts activities.
