This study compared the impact of individual characteristics and social support characteristics on school maladjustment in 2 groups of adolescents aged 17-22: 143 maltreated adolescents and 183 non-maltreated adolescents. For individual characteristics, it included gender, age, perceived economic status, and perceived school performance. For social support, it included parental support, peer support, and professional support. Using mulitiple regression analyses, it was determined that individual characteristics and social support had different impact on school maladjustment between groups. Parental support and perceived school performance were found to be significant in predicting school maladjustment in maltreated adolescents. Conversely, for non-maltreated adolescents, age and perceived economic status were found to be significant in predicting school maladjustment. Parental support was a consistent predictor of school maladjustment in both maltreated group and non-maltreated group. It was concluded that for maltreated adolescents, enhancing school performance and extending social support, especially professional support can be effective strategies to prevent this population from school maladjustment. Also, since low parental support was found to be a consistent predictor of school maladjustment in both groups, the need to develop supportive family services as well as parental education programs was emphasized.
