This Paper researched on the usage and transition condition of ‘buke(不可), bude(不得), buneng(不能), buxu(不許),’ which appeared prohibition form in representative 10 kinds of literature from ancient times to early modern times, after investigating existing view and limit concerning prohibition form. And it examined the overall system of the deontic modality negative form. The contents considered by this thesis are as follows.
First, it suggests the kinds of syntactic and pragmatic classification, on the basis of discrimination of the prohibition form.
Second, the features of ‘buke(不可), bude(不得), buneng(不能), buxu(不許)’ are as follows.
‘buke(不可)’ is being used at various writing style of written or spoken language, when presenting ‘duty’, ‘advice’, and so on. ‘bude(不得)’ is used for sentences of institution or law. It seems like ‘buneng(不能)’ is not the main expression of the prohibition form in the way that it is used few times as the prohibition form period of The Han Dynasty(漢代) to Qing dynasty(淸代). ‘buxu(不許)’ begins to appear from Song dynasty(宋代), and it is mostly used as prohibition form on Hongloumeng(『紅樓夢』), literature of Qing dynasty(淸代).
Third, the feature and cause for the transition condition of the deontic modality auxiliary verb negative form were examined. Since the transition condition cause of the deontic modality negative form includes various origins of the deontic modality negative form and the reduction phenomenon of the old type of the prohibition forms, and three types of categories for ‘exemption’, ‘disallowance’, and ‘prohibition’ in accordance with graded antonymy, it seems like the negative forms such as ‘buke(不可), bude(不得), buneng(不能), buxu(不許), buyao(不要), buxiao(不消), bubi(不必), buyong(不用), buxu(不須), bulao(不勞), budai(不待)’ appeared and were used within three types of categories for ‘exemption’, ‘disallowance’, and ‘prohibition’.
