Examined in this article are results of certain Japanese scholars’ efforts to establish a general history of Korea, during the time of Japan’s occupation of Korea. It is here examined in order to ascertain how colonial historical studies evolved and proceeded. It was the mid-1930s when such attempts by Japanese scholars suddenly increased, and such studies all shared a particular trait, like turning their attention to (not Korea but instead) strong neighboring countries, and placing an emphasis upon internal political conflicts of the Korean society. They also tried to explore previously unknown aspects of the Joseon dynasty in order to justify Japan’s colonization of Joseon and also argue how ‘closed’ the history of Korean generally had been. And they ‘excelled’ at studies of the Goryeo period as well.
All these attempts at “General History” were required by both the academic circle and the political arena, as the Joseon History Compilation Committee(朝鮮史編修會) was trying to expand the scope of colonial historical studies, and Japan, which was invading China at the time, was trying to expand its own empire even further. To serve such series of events, a new National (Japanese) history, or even East Asian history, was sorely needed, and therefore ‘general history of Joseon’ was also being pursued.
All these 1930s studies reinforced the Japanese scholars’ traditional view of the Korean history(“dependent, politically unstable, and deserving colonization”), and then established the ‘History of Japan’ as the main stage of such expanded universe, blurring the boundaries that had been earlier separating both countries, and pushing the Korean history to become part of the Japanese history in the process.
