However much Trinitarianism is studied, the research on the subject is never enough. Active in the late 4th century, Basil the Great is one of the Cappadocian Fathers who contributed to the formulation of the theory of the Trinity. This paper organizes Basil’s theory centering on his writings such as Refutation of the Apology of the Impious Eunomius written circa 364 A.D. and On the Holy Spirit written 11 years after. Followers of the anti-Trinitarianism, active around the time Basil started to appear in theological debates were Anomoians led by Aëtius of Antioch and his student Eunomius of Cyzicus. As part of the neo-Arianism, these people rejected the divinity of the Son. Eunomius, especially, claimed in his Apology that the Father who was not born to being could not be the same in essence as the Son who was begotten. In response, Basil wrote in his Refutation of the Apology of the Impious Eunomius that not only the Father and the Son are one, but the Holy Spirit as well. Also, through another writing, On the Holy Spirit, Basil testified the one-being of the Father and the Son by distinguishing the difference between two concepts that previously have been used synonymously, “ousia” and “hypostasis.” At the same time, he asserted the divinity of the Holy Spirit, thereby counteracting the Pneumatomachians who rejected the idea. Such Trinitarian theories of Basil are more than abstract research as they closely relate to worship. Basil spread Trinitarianism by writing and singing new doxology, the meaning of which is clarified in On the Holy Spirit, along with already existing songs. Among the rituals Basil laid down, the communion prayer (Anaphora) illustrates how Christians should confess their faith in the Trinity during worship prayers.
