Ezra Pound is the master of close reading. When he translates Ernest Fenollosa’s Chinese manuscripts into English, he is turning to the microscopic world of the Chinese text, and the process of Pound’s reading as the poet-translator is like navigating which requires “periplum,” “not as land looks on a map/ But as seabord seen by men sailing.” “Periplum” is a map that a cartographer draws from a bird-eye view. From this perspective one can read the whole English version in a method of distant reading, by finding out the structural principle of the literary form. After having done the close reading of the individual original text in Chinese for translation, the poet/translator was able to reach the macroscopic world of the whole texts.
When one puts this Poundian close reading against the grain of Franko Moretti’s “distant reading,” Pound’s translation will become a unique strategy for the future formal orientation. My interpretation and application of three ways of Pound’s and Kenner’s charging poetic language in the manner of close reading is as follows: 1) listening closely the exotic sounds of the target language of Chinese (melopoeia: charging a word by sound), 2) gazing at the foreign forms of the Chinese poetic space (phanopoia: using a word to throw a visual image on to the reader’s imagination), and 3) feeling the affective space of the untranslatability in a manner of Kantian “disinterested” endurance and care by coming to grapple with the Freudian uncanniness or otherness of the poetic text of Li Po (logopoia: using groups of words to do this). In this context of charging the word with meaning, what the translator needs is, in fact, a rigorous, passionate, entertaining, and differential act of cultural translation. One would need an example, such as Ezra Pounds’ translation which will be dealt with in the mixed mode of close reading and distant reading.
