In this study, the variety of the degree to participate in class as the audience of Japanese learner was analyzed.
The subject of analysis was the classroom discourse of one teacher and four Japanese learners for five minutes.
The development of conversation of four Japanese learners as audience was divided into four scenes and the behavior of the audience in each scene was examined.
As the result of the analysis of the scene 1, during the conversation between the teacher and the Japanese learner, three other Japanese learners spoke theirs minds to participate the development of conversation by using the nonverbal behavior such as the back channel, the change of their eyes, the movement of their bodies or thumbing through the page of a book. Besides, according as the conversation was developed from the scene 1 to the scene 4, the speaker and the audience were changed. When the speaker had the right to speak, the audiences showed that they participated in the conversation by using laugh, back channel and so on.
Furthermore, it was found that the degree to participate in the class was changed because the verbal behavior and nonverbal behavior of one audience who participated in the conversation were not constant at the each development of conversation.
