This study analyzed the background of the Maritime Literature Award and the contemporary winners of the Maritime Literature Award of Japan from 1997 through 2006. The foundation for the "Maritime Literature Award" that began in the early years of Meiji was affected by reestablishing the Japanese people"s "maritime" awareness for the "Maritime Literature Award" created with the "Ocean Day" in 1996 through the Showa Era and the Heisei Era. Considering the winners of the "Maritime Literature Award," 1) the image of ocean expresses one"s spirit of challenge with surfing and 2) the image of ship emphasizes the beauty of ocean. 3) The image of people working in the sea discusses the marine lives of people who survey the meteorology and sail on the foreign trade vessels. The change of awareness about the maritime space emphasizes through literary visualization that the ocean is not a space of fear, but a space of pleasure with surfing and sailing. The ocean is considered a literary topic to expand the awareness of ocean. Maritime literature on the marine lives of people elaborately depicts their fear of the ocean and how to overcome it from the perspectives of authors who have experienced the ocean. The Maritime Literature Award for the entire nation hauled the Japanese people"s interests in the maritime literature and planted their awareness about the contemporary maritime literature and the oceanic territories.
