The purpose of this article is to study the public common conviviality of Korea SGI. The Korea SGI is a kind of Mahāyāna Buddhism which originated from Japan in the 1960’s. For unenlightened persons, both moral value and conviviality are at best imperfect. The conviviality of enlightened persons is thought to be superior to the conviviality of unenlightened persons.
In fact, one of the most common portrayals of enlightened persons is that they are in a state of profound peace, calm, tranquility, and equanimity. The Korea SGI may be criticized publically as implying a critique of contemporary discussions. It has created the traits of modern Buddhism, people-reconciliation Buddhism, and life-respect Buddhism.
Firstly, the correlative linkage between public solidarity based on the blood of faith and receiving pleasure in dharma law to oneself have both contributed to establishing the public common conviviality through life-saving. This well-being is considered to be the attitude of sharing life’s goods and being happy with others in the perspective of the promise of mercy.
Secondly, the correlative linkage between the three secrets of Buddhist law, including the chanting of Lotus sutra’s title and the public common practice of benefit to others including self interest have contributed to mediation privately and publicly through life-reconciliation. The repeated mantra encourages the performer to arrive at the mandala-minded harmonious state.
Thirdly, evil thoughts can be transformed by good thoughts in Korea SGI’s belief-system, and can contribute to ‘the calm and light-filled pure land’. As Korea SGI is a religious organization, there is a correlative linkage between the public practice of the emotional will and the state of being that engenders positive emotional reasoning as opposed to ill will and evil thoughts. These aspects have contributed to activating private practice to the public through life-respecting tenets, which are centered on the essential issues of public common conviviality.
This article examines the social publicity, and the evaluation of a certain new religion in contemporary society, and seeks to analyze the discursive morphology of human spirituality. From this point of view, Korea SGI can be seen as the face of life-Buddhism, people-Buddhism and modern-Buddhism. It has made the public effort of respect for life reframed reconciliation and to saving life.
