I analyze two novels in this paper, Chae man-sik’s “Mr. Bang” and Yeom sang-sup’s “Yangkwajaka”. Existing researches are focused mainly on Bang sam bok and Young soo as hero. I expanded the scope of character analysis. I try a contrast analysis of the characters surrounding the two heros. This paper is based on the methodology that can reveal the recognition system of the writer through the analysis of the characters.
Chae man-sik filled the period of liberation with funny and negative characters. The day of liberation is in the age of surplus which is not at all serious and respectable. Chae man-sik does not seek or overcome the nature of the inevitable confusion that occurs in the transitional period of the liberation. This seems to be a certain distance from the writer as an intellectual who seriously contemplates the problems of one era.
Yeom sang-sup makes a somewhat lack of sense of principle and principleist, a life that is flexible and maintains a minimum self-esteem, a clear and upright person who has a keenness for beauty but never seems to be tempted by it. Despite the turmoil it shows hopeful prospects for the future.
