The gospel is a glorious and grand salvation work of God which covers from before the creation of the world till after the end of the world in time and from the inner world of human beings till the infinite universe in space. In this grand scale occurred the mystical union with Christ, and the glorious state of the people of God is established freely, by grace alone, permanently, and irrevocably. Calling, regeneration, justification, and becoming God’s son by adoption etc express the abundance of this establishment. Believers who are the people of God go under the serious divine command to obey the directions of the Holy Spirit and to lead sanctified life in his social as well as private life.
The blessings of salvation always begin from the regeneration occurred in the inner being, so the salvation of an individual must be always precedent to other activities absolutely in logic and also in time except for an emergent situation. However, the change in the inner being of an individual is destined to be expressed by concerns for society and functions as a driving force for the transformation of society. The ethical efforts to transform society increase the efficacy of evangelism decisively, so the salvation of an individual and social participation has an inseparable relation with each other. This means that Christians and the church should devote themselves to social participation as well as the salvation of an individual.
Christians and the church have the duty not to limit their devotion just to reliefs or individual developments but to extend their devotion even to the transformation of the social structure. Ethical practice gets its final fruits from legislation. The Scriptures criticize structural sins as well as individual sins as the prophets of the Old Testament period show well. The Scriptures require the reform of inner distorted thoughts of individuals. However, the Scriptures asks the criticism and reform of the social structures, too, when these are not harmonious with the will of God. Christians and the church should examine closely whether the social structure of Korean society is in accordance with the will of God and whether the poor’s right to live is protected by this structure, and, if the structure is not in accordance with the will of God, suggest a new social structure as an alternative one. However, the efforts to transform the social structure must be carried out not by the church itself but independent organizations consisted of experts in various social problems except for emergent situations.
