The purpose of this study is to investigate the quantitative recognition of badness among the four subcategories of bad language words[BLWs] in English and Korean. The followings are discussed in this paper. First, the semantic features are proposed for each subcategory of BLWs in English and Korean. Second, the semantic differential techniques are employed to measure the relative strength of badness of the BLWs in English and Korean. The twelve semantic differential features are proposed to measure the relative strength of badness for each BLW in English and Korean. Korean speakers have more badness points on Korean BLWs than English speakers on English BLWs, which may be related to Korean high context culture. Korean speakers have the degree of strength under the hierarchy of swearwords〉vulgarity〉epithets〉slang, while English speakers have it under that of swearwords〉epithets〉slang〉vulgarity.
