Seoul city is running a future heritage project of numerous heritages which are worth preserving and utilizing. However, in the case of future heritage of Seoul, problems arise since the subjects are not cultural assets and the whole excavation and preservation process is voluntary and unprofessional. Regarding these issues, this thesis proceeded research on building conceptual identity for future heritage based on common memories of citizens, along with preservation, and application of it. With a hypothesis of ‘Securing value for future heritage preservation enables mutually autonomous relation structure, through spatial regeneration using place memory basis’, this study draws a conclusive, future heritage place memory-based spatial regeneration model. This research implements theoretical study, literature research on future heritage, and its key concept of place memory. Consequently, it draws features such as ‘placeness’, ‘publicity’, and ‘narrativity’, and further specific sub-features. We completed an interview with an expert, and a survey to test the validity of selecting sub-features of place memory and category. Next, we implemented empirical testing to prove the validity of place memory-based spatial regeneration relation structure by doing a survey of many citizens, since the main purpose of future heritage is preserving and utilizing heritage of citizens’ shared memory. To sum up the results of the research, these are the conclusions. First, we researched on the very core of future heritage, which is the common memory of citizens, via theoretical research to analyze its features. By this, we found features of place memory such as placeness, publicity, and narrativity, and further specified sub-features as well. We used these as our theoretical basis to set a standard for place memory-based spatial regeneration. Secondly, the final version of future heritage’s place memory-based spatial regeneration hypothetic model and the check list based on it, both acquires validity with qualitative and quantitative testing via 3 times of in-depth interview and survey. Future heritage, as seen in this research, is an ordinary asset, which requires spatial regeneration entailed with place memory preservation. Preservation values can be reinforced by utilization values, and this is enabled by supplementation of sharing values and improvement values. This research on spatial regeneration, which is such a practical perspective, creates motivation for preservation value reinforcement, and helps building a future heritage’s place memory-based regeneration structure.
